This is where most smart opener installs go wrong, and detached garages are the usual culprit. Brick walls, a steel door, and forty feet of yard between the router in the house and a controller bolted to the ceiling. Before we fit anything we check the actual signal strength at the opener position.

Where it is marginal, the fix is on the network side, not the door side. A mesh point in the room of the house closest to the garage, or a wired access point run out to a detached building, solves it. A controller that drops off the network every few days is worse than having no controller at all, because you stop trusting what the app tells you.

Automatic close on a timer handles the household member who leaves it open. Open-too-long alerts catch the times nobody noticed. Separate access for family or a contractor can be revoked on its own without changing anything else. An exterior keypad on the jamb is the backup that still works when the internet does not, and it is worth having.
