Testing the Parts That Are Meant to Stop the Door
Since the start of 1993, residential garage door openers sold in the United States have been required to include external entrapment protection. In practice that means a pair of photo eyes mounted low on either side of the opening. Openers built before that date rely on the motor sensing resistance and nothing else, and a fair number of them are still bolted to ceilings in South Holland.

An inspection is not a look around. It is a short list of tests with pass or fail answers, and the two that matter most take a scrap of timber and about thirty seconds each. You are welcome to stand there and watch both.
The two tests you can watch us run
The reversal test: a length of two-by-four laid flat on the floor in the door's path. The door is closed onto it. On contact it must stop and reverse. If it sits on the timber, or pushes, or reverses only after a pause, the opener is not currently protecting anything underneath it.
The photo-eye test: with the door closing, the beam is broken with an object, never a foot and never a person. The door must stop and go back up immediately. A third check covers closing force, where firm hand pressure on the descending door should trigger a reverse. Openers drift on all three over the years, particularly once someone has turned the force up to cure a door that was really out of balance.
Balance, the safety test nobody thinks of as one
Pull the release cord with the door down, lift it by hand to waist height, and let go. A correctly sprung door stays where you put it. If it drops, the springs have stopped carrying the weight, and the only thing holding that door up when it is open is an opener that was never designed as a lifting device. If it climbs on its own, the springs are over-wound and the door will not seat on its seal.
That single test says more about the condition of the system than everything else combined, because a badly balanced door is what quietly destroys openers, cables, hinges and rollers. It is also the test most likely to explain why the auto-reverse has been failing.
Two moments when this is genuinely worth booking
The first is when small children start using the driveway again, which in a village where families stay put often means grandchildren. Nothing about a door's appearance tells you whether its safety features work, and the answer takes minutes to establish.
The second is when a long-held house is going on the market. Buyers' home inspectors do test auto-reverse and they do note frayed cables, missing sensors and a door that will not stay put by hand. A line item like that in a report turns into a negotiation you did not need. Finding out first is cheaper in every sense, and the diagnosis costs you nothing either way.

Our opener is old and has no sensors. Can photo eyes just be added?
Not to most pre-1993 units. The logic board has no provision for the sensor circuit, so there is nothing to wire them into. On those openers the safe fix is a new unit, and it is one of the few times we will tell you replacement is the only real option.
The door reverses on its own for no obvious reason.
Nine times out of ten it is the photo eyes. A bracket knocked out of alignment, a lens filmed over with dust, low winter sun landing on the receiver, or a staple driven through the wire years ago that has finally cut the insulation. The other cause is a close-force setting that has been turned down too far.
