The containment cable, and why we will not leave one off
An extension spring stores its energy along its length while the door is down. When it lets go, that energy releases in a straight line and the broken half whips back along the track at speed. A safety containment cable is a steel cable threaded through the middle of the spring and anchored at both ends. It does nothing at all until the day the spring breaks, and on that day it catches the pieces.
Plenty of the extension sets still working in South Holland were installed before containment cables became standard practice, so they have never had them. We fit them on every extension job we touch, on both sides, including the spring that did not break.
Pairs, even lift, and the pulley nobody looks at
Extension springs stretch permanently as they age. Replacing one and leaving its partner produces uneven lift, and uneven lift racks the door in the tracks. That is the most common route to a door coming off its rollers, and it usually happens weeks after the spring work rather than during it.
The pulleys at the ends of the springs are the same age as the springs. Their sheave bearings dry out, the wheel starts to bind, and the lift cable begins cutting a groove into the rim. Once that groove starts it chews the cable. We change springs, pulleys and the S-hooks or clips as one set, because half the job coming back in a year is not a saving.
Keep extension, or convert to torsion
Some openings do not offer a choice. A low-headroom detached garage with a rafter tie sitting just above the door has nowhere to put a torsion shaft, and extension springs remain the right answer there.
Where there is roughly twelve inches of clear headroom above the opening and the door sees daily use, converting to torsion is a genuine upgrade. Travel is smoother, balance is easier to set precisely, and the load pulls straight down the center of the opening rather than dragging on the horizontal tracks. We will tell you which of the two your opening actually allows, and if it is extension we will say so.

One spring snapped and the other one looks perfectly good. Can we just do the one?
We would not recommend it. The intact spring has stretched over the same years and no longer returns to the same free length, so the door lifts unevenly and starts binding in the track. Replacing both is the difference between a repair and a temporary fix.
The detached garage only gets opened a few times a month. Is the containment cable really necessary?
Yes. A spring does not break on a schedule, and it does not care how often the door is used. The failure is sudden whichever door it happens on, and the containment cable is a small piece of steel that decides where the broken half ends up.
There are two springs on each side of my door. Is that a fault?
No, it is a doubled-up set, and it is normal on heavier wood doors that needed more lift than a single pair could provide. All four have to match each other and be replaced together, otherwise the lift goes out of balance side to side.
