Designing a Door That Suits a Brick Ranch

Proportion does most of the work, and it is the part people skip. A wide, low opening reads badly with tall narrow panel divisions; it wants horizontal emphasis and, if there is glazing, a window row set high in the top section. Get the proportions right and the door settles into the house. Get them wrong and no amount of decorative hardware rescues it.
Working with the brick you already have
South Holland's mid-century brick runs warm. Reds, buffs, and variegated blends, often with a contrasting course around the openings. A cool bright white door fights all of that, which is why so many replacements look newer than the house rather than better than the house.

In practice the trim, soffit and fascia colors decide the door more often than the brick does, because those are the lines the eye reads alongside it.
Materials, weight, and what your opening will carry
Steel with an insulated core, composite overlay on a steel base, and genuine wood behave like different products. Wood and heavy overlay doors weigh far more than the door coming off, and that cascades: springs have to be recalculated, hinges and rollers stepped up, and the opener reassessed for the load and duty.
Headroom is the other constraint. Where the ceiling is tight, low-headroom or high-lift hardware may be needed, and that changes the track layout and sometimes the drum size. We work all of it out at the measure, so the design you approve is one your opening can actually hang rather than one that needs redesigning after the order goes in.
Windows, hardware and knowing when to stop
Glazing changes the face of a door more than any other single choice, and it does real work if the garage doubles as a workshop. Options run from clear insulated glass through obscure and frosted, which is worth considering on a garage that faces the street directly.
Decorative handles and strap hinges belong on carriage styling and look bolted on where the door is not pretending to be a carriage door. On a well-kept ranch our advice is usually fewer decisions executed properly: right proportion, right color, good glass, and hardware only where the style earns it.
