Replacing One Section Instead of the Whole Door
Section damage arrives one of three ways. Somebody backs into the door. The bottom section rusts through from the inside after years of standing in slush. Or a section cracks along the strut line because the door has been traveling out of square long enough to twist the steel.

Only the first of those is obvious from the driveway. The other two build slowly, and on South Holland's long-owned houses they usually turn up on the bottom section of a door the owner had no complaints about at all.
Why the bottom section always goes first
Salted slush drips off the car and pools on the slab. On a floor that has settled toward the opening over sixty years, it pools right along the closing line, which is where the bottom of the door sits for twenty-three hours a day. Steel sections rust from the inside face outward, so the paint on the outside can look intact while the section behind it is going.
The tell-tale signs are paint bubbling in a line an inch or two above the seal, a soft patch you can press with a thumb, or a bottom seal retainer that has started to curl away from the door. Where the end stiles are still solid, swapping that one section, fitting a fresh retainer and a new seal, and correcting the slab drainage habit gets a good door back.
Matching a section on a door older than the catalog
Panel profiles get discontinued. Long-panel and short-panel raised styles, ribbed, flush and the various stamped wood-grain textures have all come and gone. We measure the section height, count the ribs, photograph the profile and note the hinge and track pattern, then check what the manufacturer still lists against that door.
Where the exact profile has gone out of production, the choices are a compatible profile finished to match, or a two-section swap that keeps the door looking intentional rather than patched. Either way, be prepared for the color question. Decades of sun on a south-facing door means a brand-new white section and an old white door are not the same white, and finishing on site is often the better answer.
When we will tell you to replace the door instead
Three or more damaged sections usually tips the arithmetic. So does rust that has run into the end stiles, because that is the structural part the hinges and rollers bolt to, and a section replacement cannot fix a stile that has gone. Doors whose hardware pattern is no longer made are a third case.
Around South Holland the answer is more often the section than the door, because these doors have generally been cared for and the rest of the system is sound. But not always, and we would rather tell you that at the estimate than after you have paid for a section that was never going to be enough.

Questions
South Holland questions about this job
Will the new section be a different shade to the rest of the door?
Probably, at first. Factory finishes fade with sun and the older sections have had years of it. We will show you the new section against the door before it goes on, and where the difference is obvious the fix is finishing the replacement to match rather than pretending it will blend.
The door still opens and closes. Is a dented section actually urgent?
It depends where the dent is. A shallow dent in the flat of a panel is cosmetic. A crease across a strut line, a bent end stile, or damage near a hinge changes how the section carries load, and that starts affecting travel and the seal at the floor.
Can a dent be pushed back out rather than replaced?
Sometimes, on shallow damage in a flat area of thin-gauge steel, though the finish rarely comes back perfectly. Once the steel is creased or a stile is bent, the metal has stretched and pushing it out will not restore the shape or the strength.
