Screw drives, chain drives and what is still worth fixing
A chain drive is generally repairable. Gears strip, the sprocket wears, travel limits drift, the capacitor gives up. All of that is a part, not a new machine. Screw drives are fussier: the carriage and the grease on the threaded rail matter more than people expect, and a dry rail in an unheated brick garage will stall a motor that is otherwise healthy.
The line we draw is about parts and safety, not age for its own sake. If the logic board is obsolete, the rail is worn out, or the unit predates proper photo-eye sensing, replacement is the honest answer. If it is a gear kit and a limit adjustment, that is what it gets.

The safety sensors sit low on either side of the opening, which around here means they sit exactly where snow gets shovelled, where a bike leans and where meltwater runs back in off the driveway. A door that starts down and reverses, or refuses to move while the light bar blinks, is very often reporting a sensor knocked out of line or fogged over rather than a fault in the motor.
We realign the brackets, then follow the wiring back to the head. Those staples along the joist in older garages are a common break point, pinched years ago and finally letting go. Down force gets set again afterwards so the door closes without slamming.
When the opener is only reporting a heavier door
An opener is built to move a balanced door, not to lift a dead weight. Tired springs, a dragging cable or a roller binding in the track all present first as opener symptoms: slow travel, groaning on the way up, stopping short, reversing for no visible reason. Replacing the unit in that situation buys a quieter noise for a few months and nothing more.
So the door comes off the opener and gets lifted by hand before any part is quoted. If it is heavy in the hands, or it will not hold itself halfway up, the problem is upstream of the motor and we will say so plainly.

The opener light blinks and the door will not close. Is the motor going?
Usually not. A blinking light with no movement is the standard way an opener tells you the safety sensors cannot see each other. A knock, a cobweb, low winter sun straight into the lens or a broken staple in the sensor wiring will all do it. In most cases it is a short fix.
Can you still get parts for a unit from the eighties?
For some, yes. Gears, sprockets, capacitors and limit switches are still available for several long-running models. Logic boards for discontinued units are the usual dead end. We check availability on site and tell you what we find before you commit to anything.
It runs fine all summer and struggles on cold mornings. What is that?
Cold thickens old grease and stiffens a weather seal that has frozen to the slab, so the door genuinely is harder to move in January. An opener near the end of its life shows it there first. Lubrication on the right points and a force adjustment often settles it. If it does not, the springs are usually the reason.
