The release cord is only useful if somebody can lift the door
The red cord disconnects the door from the opener so it can be moved by hand. Everyone knows it exists. Far fewer households have ever tried it, and that is the problem. Pulled with the door open and a broken spring, the door drops. Pulled with the door closed and a healthy spring, a balanced door lifts with one hand.
If the person most likely to be home alone cannot raise the door after disconnecting it, the door is out of balance and the spring is doing less than it should. We test that with you rather than for you, because the point is that the household knows how it feels when it is right.
Entrapment protection fails quietly
Two systems are meant to stop a door closing on something. The photo eyes mounted low across the opening, and the opener's own force reversal. Neither announces its own failure.
Photo eyes drift on their brackets when a car door brushes past. On a slab that has heaved they end up out of line with each other. Late afternoon sun straight into a west-facing opening can blind the receiver. Force reversal gets defeated by somebody turning the dial up to stop nuisance reversals. Both get tested against an obstruction on the floor and set back where they belong.
The parts that carry the door, and the things stacked against them
Bottom brackets, cable ends, the spring anchor and the lag bolts holding all of it are the failure points that actually hurt people. On a garage built seventy years ago they are anchored into old framing, or into masonry that has taken a great many freeze-thaw cycles.
The other half of the check is what surrounds the door. Shelving hard against a vertical track, a bike leaning on the bottom section, a bin sitting in the closing path. Unglamorous, but a fair share of the damage we get called to started as something stored in the wrong place.

The door reverses when there is nothing under it. Fault or safety feature?
It is the safety working, and it is telling you something. Nuisance reversals usually mean the door has grown harder to move, so the opener reaches its force limit early. The answer is to remove the resistance, not to turn the force up.
Our opener is old but it works. Does it have to be replaced?
Not automatically. Openers built from 1993 onward were required to carry photo eyes or an equivalent second means of protection. If yours predates that, or the sensors were bypassed at some point, that is the part worth putting right first.
An older relative is moving in. What should we check first?
Balance, then the release cord. A door they can lift by hand after disconnecting is a door that will not trap them in a power cut. After that, a wall control mounted out of a child's reach and a keypad outside so nobody gets locked out.
