Designing a Door for a Wide, Low Brick Ranch
A ranch elevation is wide and low. The garage door sits at the same height as the front windows, on the same plane as the front wall, and takes up a third or more of what you see from the street. Get it wrong and it is the only thing you see.

Custom does not have to mean hand-built. On most of these houses it means choosing the panel profile, the glazing, the colour and the hardware deliberately rather than accepting whatever a supplier happens to stock.
Horizontal lines suit the house better than tall ones
Carriage styling with vertical planks and strap hinges belongs on a house with height to carry it. On a long, low brick ranch it fights the roofline. Long raised panels or a flush face read horizontally and let the door settle back into the elevation.
Where an opening was widened at some point over the years, proportion matters more still. A sixteen-foot door on a house designed around an eight-foot one wants a quieter face, not a busier one.
Colour gets decided against brick, not against a brochure
Oak Lawn brick runs red, tan and blonde, often with a limestone sill course or a decorative panel beside the opening. Bright white next to blonde brick is harsher in daylight than it looks on a sample card. Almond, sandstone and the warmer greys usually sit better.
The other approach is to match the door to the front door and the trim instead of to the brick, which gives an elevation two deliberate colours rather than three accidental ones. We bring samples and hold them against the wall before anyone orders.
Every choice is also a weight and a load
Windows are the clearest example. A row of lights goes in the top section, which is the section the opener arm pulls on and the one furthest from where the springs have their best leverage. Insulated glass across a wide door adds real weight up there.
Insulation does the same thing. A polyurethane-filled steel door is stiffer, quieter and warmer, and heavier than the single-skin door it replaces. Springs get sized to the finished door rather than the old one, and the opener has to be rated for it. That is worked out at design stage, not on installation day.

Can we get a wood look without wood?

Not always. Standard widths cover a lot of converted openings once the jambs are made good. Where it genuinely is odd, a made-to-size door is straightforward. We measure the opening for square before deciding.
Will windows make the garage colder?
Marginally, if you choose insulated glazing. The bigger question is privacy on a door facing the street. Obscure or frosted glass gives you daylight inside without a view in from the sidewalk.
