Why the springs on your block are not all the same
Oak Lawn filled in fast and has been altering itself ever since. Single doors were widened, detached garages went up out by the alley, and hardware was replaced piecemeal by whoever was cheapest that year. We open one garage with a torsion shaft over the opening and the next with extension springs and no safety cable on them at all.
That mix is why a visit starts with a look rather than a part. Extension springs pull from the back of the horizontal track. Torsion springs wind on a shaft above the header. They fail differently, they are sized differently, and getting the choice wrong leaves you with a door that either floats off the floor or drops the last foot.
Safety cables on the older single doors
An extension spring stores its energy stretched out along the track at head height. When one breaks it does not simply go slack, it whips. A safety cable is a length of aircraft cable threaded down the middle of the spring and anchored at both ends, so a break has nowhere to travel.
Plenty of the original 8-foot and 9-foot doors still working around the older streets have never had them fitted. If yours is one of those, the cables go on with the new springs. It is a small part of the job and the single most useful thing you can do to an older extension setup.
The four numbers that decide the spring
A torsion spring is specified by wire gauge, inside diameter, overall length and wind direction. Get any of those four wrong and the door is out of balance from its first cycle. Where the old spring is still legible we measure it. Where it has already been replaced with something approximate, or the door itself has changed since, we weigh the door and size from the weight.
Both springs go on together where the door carries a pair. After that the drums are re-seated, the cables tensioned evenly, and balance checked with the opener disconnected. A properly counterbalanced door stays where you leave it at waist height. Safety reverse and the end bearings get checked before anything is packed away.

My door has the long springs running back along the ceiling. Should those be converted to torsion?
Not automatically. Healthy extension springs with safety cables through them are a legitimate system and can be replaced like for like. Conversion is worth discussing when the door has been made heavier than the original, when the springs have failed more than once, or when the pulleys and anchors around them are worn out. We will tell you which case yours is.
The garage was built for one car and now has a 16-foot door. Does that change the springs?
It changes everything about them. A wider, heavier door needs a spring sized for the new weight and travel, and often a different shaft and drums with it. Where a widening was done cheaply, undersized springs are the usual shortcut, and they show up later as springs that keep breaking early.
We go in and out through the garage several times a day. How long should a new set last?
Springs are rated in cycles rather than years, and one cycle is one trip up and one trip down. A standard set is rated near ten thousand. A household making five round trips a day works through that far quicker than one making a single trip. If yours is a busy door, ask about a higher-cycle set when we quote the work.
