Cables are the link between the counterbalance and the door itself. One runs from the bottom bracket on each side up to a drum on the torsion shaft, or over a pulley on an extension setup. Lose one and the door tries to lift on a single corner.
Telling a snapped cable from a snapped spring
Look above the door first. A torsion spring that has failed shows a clean gap in the coil, usually a couple of inches wide, and the shaft turns freely by hand. If the spring is whole but the door sits skewed in the opening, or there is loose cable hanging in a loop beside the track, the cable is what let go.
There is a third case that catches people out. The cable has not broken at all. It has jumped off the drum and wound itself into the wrong groove, or wrapped back over itself. The door still moves, badly, and every cycle after that chews the drum a little more.
The parts at the ends of an older extension setup
On the original single doors around the older streets the cable runs over a pulley at each end instead of a drum. Those pulleys have plain bearings that dry out, seize, then grind through the cable passing over them. The S-hooks and the anchors at the back of the horizontal track tell the same story: small parts, out of sight, doing real work.
Replacing a frayed cable and leaving the pulley that frayed it is not a repair, it is a rebooking. When cables get done on that hardware, the pulleys, hooks and rear anchors are part of the same look.
Salt, standing water and the bottom four inches
The cable anchors to a bracket at the very bottom corner of the door, exactly where slush collects and where road salt gets carried in on tyres. On a drive that falls back towards the garage, that corner spends much of the winter wet. Cables fail from the bottom upward for that reason, and the bracket itself often needs doing at the same time.
That bracket sits under full spring tension whenever the door is down, which is why it is not a homeowner fitting. Cables go on in pairs, drums are re-seated and set to matching tension, and the door is run and watched for level travel right across the opening before we call it finished.

Very likely a factor. Standing meltwater with salt in it attacks the strands and the bottom bracket faster than anything else on the door. New cable and bracket plus a decent bottom seal will help, but if water genuinely pools against the door, the drainage is worth sorting as well.
Can the cables be replaced without touching the springs?
Yes, where the springs are sound. Tension has to be released to work safely and then reset, but the springs themselves stay. We check them while we are in there regardless, because a cable that failed under a sudden shock load often had a tired spring behind it.
