Telling yours apart from a torsion setup
Open the door and look up along the ceiling. Extension springs run front to back, one above each horizontal track, anchored at the rear to a hanger in the rafters and at the front to a pulley on the track bracket. A torsion system looks nothing like that: a single shaft across the wall above the opening.
Both are common here. Blocks of original single-car garages still run extension springs, while doors fitted or widened in the last twenty years are almost always torsion. Finding one of each on the same street is normal.
The spring is half of what gets replaced
An extension system carries a lot of small parts under load. Each side has a lift cable, two pulleys with sheaves turning on pins, S-hooks, and a clip where the cable terminates. Pulleys wear grooves. Sheaves seize and the cable saws through them. Hooks open up.
The rear hanger gets checked at the same time. It is a bracket lagged into a rafter, and on garages of this age the timber around those screws has been drying out for decades. A hanger that has worked loose lets the spring sit at the wrong angle, which wears the pulleys from the day it is fitted.
Fitting a new spring to worn pulleys and a frayed cable buys a few months. We work on the side as a unit, both sides together, so the door comes back symmetrical instead of half new.
Containment cable is not optional
A safety cable runs through the middle of each spring and ties off at both ends. If the spring breaks, the cable keeps the pieces on the wire instead of letting them travel across the garage. A stretched spring holds real energy and releases all of it at once.

Usually. Springs that have stretched stop supporting the door near the end of travel, so it runs away from the opener at the bottom. Worn pulleys and a slack cable give the same feel, which is why the whole side gets checked.

They have done identical work for identical years. Leaving the old one gives you a door that pulls to one side and a second failure that is a question of when, not if.
The garage is detached and only opens at weekends. Do springs still wear out?
