Broken Torsion Spring on an Oak Lawn Garage
People describe the sound the same way nearly every time. A bang from the garage, loud enough to carry through the house, usually on a cold morning or in the middle of the night. Nothing else happens. The next person to use the door finds it will not move.

That bang is a torsion spring failing. The spring sits on a shaft above the opening and carries almost all of the door's weight. Without it, the door weighs what it has always actually weighed, and on a double that is a couple of hundred pounds hanging off two cables.
What to do between the bang and our arrival
Leave the opener alone. A residential opener is built to guide a balanced door, not to lift a dead one. People press the button a few more times to be sure, and the motor either strips its gear, bends the top section, or drags a cable off its drum. Now it is three repairs instead of one.
If the door is down, leave it down and take the other car. If it is stuck open, do not pull the release cord while it is up there. With no spring holding it, a disconnected door comes down at full weight. That is the one thing worth being genuinely careful about.
Mounting torsion hardware on a masonry garage
Plenty of Oak Lawn garages are brick or block, and the header above the opening is not always the timber the hardware expects. The centre bearing plate and the two end plates have to be anchored into something that will hold against a loaded spring. On older builds we sometimes find them lagged into a rotted wood filler or straight into a mortar joint. That gets corrected before a new spring goes on.
Headroom matters too. The single-car garages built here in the fifties were tight, and where an opening was later widened the shaft often ended up higher, lower or shorter than the door wants. We measure shaft, drums and cable length rather than assume the last installer got it right.
Why the second spring gets replaced too
On a two-spring setup both were wound the same day and have taken the same number of cycles. When one breaks the other is not far behind. Replacing a single spring leaves mismatched loads on the shaft and, most likely, a second call within a season.
A spring's working life is measured in cycles rather than in calendar time. A door on an attached garage that the family treats as the main entrance runs through them far faster than a detached garage opened twice a week. If yours is the first kind, ask about a higher cycle rating while we are quoting.

Questions
Oak Lawn questions about this job
The spring is broken but the opener still drags the door up. Can we keep using it?
No. What you are watching is the motor and gear taking a load they were never designed for. Every cycle risks bending the top section or pulling a cable off its drum. Park outside and leave the door shut.
Do you carry springs on the truck or does it get ordered?
Common sizes ride on the truck, which covers most residential doors around Oak Lawn. Oversized, high cycle and unusual wire diameters sometimes need a day. You will know which one you have before we start.
Can a torsion spring be adjusted instead of replaced?
Only if it is intact and the door has simply drifted out of balance. A spring with a visible gap in the coil is finished, and winding a tired spring tighter to compensate shortens what life it has left.
