Two other things weigh on the decision. Openers built before photo-eye sensors became standard cannot be brought up to current safety practice by repair alone. And on a rebuilt house with bedrooms over the garage, a belt drive or a wall-mount unit changes the noise so much that patching the old head stops being the sensible spend. No, that is the receiver rather than the motor. Older units have a separate receiver section that can fail on its own, and on many heads it is a replaceable part. Two things worth ruling out first: flat remote batteries, and a lock or vacation switch on the wall console that disables the remotes by design.
Our garage is detached and the house wifi does not reach it. Can we still get phone control?
Usually, though the deciding factor is signal rather than the opener itself. A smart head or a bolt-on module has to hold a connection out at the garage, which often means an access point or a mesh node at that end of the property first. Where the coverage simply is not there, you will be told that up front rather than sold a module that cannot work.
The motor runs but the door barely moves. What is that?
Look at the springs before you blame the motor. Chain or belt travelling with the door not following means one of two things: the trolley has been left disengaged, or the plastic drive gear up in the head has finally given up its teeth. Both normally trace back to weeks of the opener hauling on a door the springs stopped supporting. Leave it alone at that point, because the damage escalates quickly.
