Winding a New Torsion Spring Over a Park Ridge Door

Stand inside with the door shut and look at the bar running above the opening. The spring wound around it should be one continuous coil. A break shows as a clean gap, usually about the width of a finger, with the two halves sitting slightly apart. Nothing else has to look wrong for that to be the whole story: the spring, not the motor, carries the weight.
The failure itself is loud, and in a detached garage at the back of the lot nobody hears a thing. Those calls come in a day or two later described as an opener problem: the motor runs, the door lifts a few inches and stops, and the head unit has been quietly destroying itself trying.
Brick Garages and the Anchor the Spring Pulls Against
The centre of a torsion assembly bolts to an anchor bracket fixed above the opening, and everything the spring does is transmitted into that fixing. In the older masonry garages here, the header behind it is often a timber plate bolted flat to brick.
That plate is the first thing inspected. Decades in an unheated building leave some of them split around the bolt holes, or holding fasteners that turn freely in enlarged timber. Winding a fresh spring onto a tired anchor is a repair with an expiry date. Where the timber has gone, the fix is a sound plate properly through-bolted before anything is wound at all.
What Happens on the Ladder
The door comes down and gets clamped in the track. If the old spring still holds tension it is unwound with bars, never cut. The shaft slides out and the bearings get a look while everything is apart. The opener goes back on last and re-learns its limits against a door that finally weighs what it always did.

There is only one spring above our door, not two. Is that wrong?
Not by itself. Plenty of lighter single doors are correctly set up with one spring sized for the job. It becomes a problem when the door has since got heavier, which is exactly what happens when an old wooden door is swapped for an insulated steel one and the original spring is left in place. Then a two-spring conversion is the honest answer.
Can our spring just be wound tighter instead of replaced?
Adding turns to a sound spring that has relaxed slightly is a normal adjustment and takes minutes. Doing it to a spring that has lost real length through fatigue is not a repair, it is borrowing against the break. The technician can tell the two apart by measuring the coil, and will say which one you have.
How is the number of turns decided?
