Decades of that in a building with no heat leaves a hanger that has drawn down out of position. The horizontal track loses its correct slope, the door stops coasting into the last few inches and starts slamming them instead, and the springs get blamed for a fault that lives in the roof structure. Blocking between rafters and longer fasteners into sound timber puts the geometry back where the door expects it.
Safety Cables, Pulleys and the Torsion Question
A stretched extension spring holds a lot of energy in a straight line. A containment cable threaded down the middle and anchored at both ends is what keeps the pieces on the wall if it snaps, and on the doors we open up here it is missing at least as often as it is present. It goes in with the new springs as a matter of course, along with fresh pulleys and S-hooks, since a seized pulley is what quietly saws through the lift cable next.
People often ask whether to convert to torsion at the same time. It is a genuine improvement in balance and noise, but it needs headroom above the opening and clear side room, and those are precisely what these older garages are short of. Where the measurements do not allow it, a correctly matched pair of extension springs with proper containment and good pulleys is a safe, long-serving system. The conversion argument gets much stronger when the door itself is due for replacement anyway.

How do I tell which type of spring I have?
Look at the ceiling with the door shut. A steel bar spanning the opening with a coil wrapped round it is torsion. Springs lying back along the ceiling beside each track, roughly over where your car sits, are extension. If they visibly grow longer as the door closes, they are extension.
Only one of ours snapped. Does the good one really have to go too?

The door goes up lopsided but nothing looks broken. What is that?
Usually unequal spring length rather than damage. One side has stretched further than the other, so it pulls with less force and that corner lags.
