What a garage door wants is something that stays where it is put: a lithium-based grease or a product made for the job, applied thinly to a short list of places and kept off everything else. That list is shorter than most people expect.
Where It Goes and Where It Absolutely Does Not
It goes on the hinge pivots, the roller stems and any exposed bearing race, the coils of a torsion spring where a light film cuts coil-on-coil friction and slows rust, the end bearing plates and centre bearing the shaft turns in, and the chain or screw of the drive rail.
It stays off four things. The track, because rollers roll rather than slide and grease in a channel only gives grit somewhere to bind. Sealed nylon roller bearings, sealed precisely so nothing gets in, meaning anything sprayed on just collects dust. The photo-eye lenses, for obvious reasons. And rubber seals, which want silicone rather than oil, since petroleum swells rubber and leaves it tacky. Belt drives get nothing on the belt.
Cold Changes the Product, Not Just the Schedule
A detached garage off the alley with no heat in it can sit below freezing for months. Heavy grease thickens in that, and a door running perfectly in October begins to drag by mid-January. The opener does not know why. It only knows the load has gone up, and on a marginal force setting that is when it starts reversing partway.
The answer is a thinner-bodied lithium spray that stays workable when cold, put on sparingly, rather than packing on a chassis grease that behaves like toffee at low temperature. Old thickened grease gets cleaned off first, because fresh product over hardened product sits on top of the problem. The bottom rubber seal gets its silicone before the first freeze, which is what stops it bonding itself to the slab overnight.
The Tune-Up Half: Quiet Is Not the Same as Right
Lubrication treats a symptom, and it is very good at it. If the noise came from a flat-spotted roller, a loose top bracket, a hinge moving in an enlarged screw hole or a door out of balance, the silence you buy is temporary and the wear underneath carries on at the same rate.
So the visit includes a mechanical pass alongside the grease. Fasteners are brought up tight without being overdriven into softened old timber, which strips more hinge screws than anything else in these garages. Roller condition, track plumb and spacing, and a balance test by hand with the opener released. Photo-eyes and the reversal get proved. Travel limits and force are reset at the end. Then you get told which half your door needed, and if it was the mechanical half, no amount of lubricant was going to hold it.

How often should a door be lubricated here?
Twice a year suits a garage in daily use in this climate, timed either side of winter so the door goes into the cold with fresh product and comes out of it clean. Once a year is plenty for a lightly used door. If it starts squealing well before that, lubricant is not the answer and something is wearing.
Can I do this myself?
The hinges, roller stems and bearing plates, yes, with the right product and a rag to catch the overspray. The torsion spring and shaft are reachable off a ladder, but that is also where the stored energy lives, so if you are not certain what you are touching up there, do the low work and leave the springs. Nothing goes near the photo-eyes or onto a drive belt.
I greased ours and now it is noisier. What went wrong?
Almost always one of two things. The wrong product, typically a penetrating spray that stripped what was left in the bearings. Or grease applied over a layer of grit, which turns into grinding paste. Greasing the track does both at once and makes the rollers skid instead of turn. Clean it all off and start again with the short list.
