The result always takes the same shape. One corner drops, the other stays where it was, the door wedges itself in the tracks at an angle, and a loose loop of wire hangs down beside it.
Older Doors Run on Pulleys, Not Drums
On the extension-spring doors still hanging in a lot of the detached garages here, the cable never touches a drum. Its route is longer: up from the bottom corner, over a pulley hung at the rear of the horizontal track, along to a second pulley on the end of the spring, then back to a fixed anchor. Each of those pulleys carries a bearing, an S-hook and a spot where wire can chafe.
Seized pulleys are what kill these cables. The wheel stops turning, so the cable saws across a fixed point instead of rolling over it and wears through from the outside in. Threading a new cable over a tired pulley is a repair with a short life, so the pulleys, hooks and containment cable are replaced along with it.
What Was Already Wrong Before the Cable Let Go
Cables rarely fail on their own account. A snapped spring dumps the load onto them without warning. A door that has been running crooked for months wears one side hard. A bottom bracket rusted where it meets the slab gives the strands a sharp edge to work against. The cable is usually the loudest symptom rather than the original fault.
So the inspection covers springs, drums or pulleys, bottom fixings and track before anything is threaded back on. Replacing only the wire, on a system that just ate the last one, books the same visit again a few months out.
Wire Gauge, and Doors That Got Heavier
Cable is specified to the weight it carries. A rebuilt house whose old single door was swapped for a wide insulated double needs cable, drums and springs to match that change, and undersized wire left behind by a hurried install does turn up. It holds perfectly well, right until it does not.
New cable goes on both sides, never one, since the surviving side has done exactly the same work for exactly as long. Once it is on, the bottom of the door is brought back level across the opening and the balance rechecked by hand. The last step is undoing whatever was fiddled with earlier: a door that has been struggling for weeks has usually had its opener settings pushed to compensate, and those get wound back to where they should sit.

A wire is hanging loose down one side but the door is still running. Do I have to stop?
Please stop. Every cycle on one cable levers the door harder out of square, which racks the sections, distorts the rail and often takes the surviving cable with it. Disconnect the opener so it cannot be triggered from a remote in somebody's car, leave the door shut, and get it booked.
Our springs run along the sides rather than above the door. Does that change the work?
It changes the parts. Side-mounted extension springs put their cables over pulleys, so pulleys, S-hooks and the safety containment cable are all part of the job. Those doors also want checking for a containment cable through each spring, because a great many of them never had one fitted in the first place.
How long does cable work take?
Once the door is down and the spring tension is safely controlled, the wire itself is quick work. The time goes on collateral damage: a corner fixing bent by the drop, grooves worn into a drum or pulley, a panel twisted out of line. Anything of that sort gets pointed out and agreed before the job starts, never tacked on at the end.
