The Elevation Decides the Style, Not the Brochure
A Georgian or bungalow front rewards restraint. A flush slab or a lightly recessed long-panel door, simple hardware, and a colour tied to the trim or the roof rather than competing with the masonry, will outlast a fashionable choice. Carriage-house designs earn their place where the garage reads as an outbuilding, which is exactly what a detached garage on a side drive is.
The rebuilt houses ask a different question. Openings are wider, elevations taller, and a full-view aluminium door or a modern slab carries that scale without looking undersized. Glazing is where the two worlds diverge. A row of lites across the top section suits a garage the street can see. On an alley-facing door glass stops being a design decision and becomes a security one.
What the Opening and the Hardware Will Allow
Custom does not overrule physics. Headroom, side room and the space back along the ceiling constrain what can be hung, and a masonry opening is fixed unless you treat it as building work. Weight is the constraint people forget. Solid timber, insulated steel and full-view aluminium are wildly different loads, and the springs, drums, cable gauge and sometimes the track are specified to the door being built. If the existing opener is staying, its duty gets checked against the new weight first.
Timber deserves a paragraph of its own in a town with this many unheated detached garages. A real wood door moves with the seasons, taking on moisture in spring and giving it back in a dry winter, which changes its dimensions and its weight. It can be a superb door here, but only if it is finished on all six faces, including the top and bottom edges nobody sees once it is hung. That is the step most often skipped, and the one that decides whether it lasts.
Seeing It Before It Is Built
Everything is measured on site and the elevation photographed, so the design can be laid over a picture of your house. Judging a door against your own brick, trim colour and roofline is a different exercise from judging it in a brochure.
Colour chips get looked at outdoors, at the hour the front catches sun, held against the brick rather than the trim. One last piece of plain information: on a steel or composite carriage-style door the strap hinges and handles are decorative. They hold nothing together, so choose them purely for looks. Will a wooden door survive an unheated detached garage?
It can, and there are plenty around here doing it, but only with the finish maintained on every face including the concealed top and bottom edges. Expect it to move a little with the seasons. Expect it also to weigh more in a damp spring than it did the day it was hung, which is why the spring specification allows for a wood door rather than treating it like steel.
Can we get the carriage look without buying real timber?
Yes. Stamped steel and composite doors with applied overlays get very close from the street and behave far better in weather, with lower maintenance and a stable weight. Up close a trained eye sees the difference. From the pavement almost nobody does, and the hardware on either version is ornamental.
How much glass is too much on a door facing the alley?
Two things push against each other. Glass at eye level on a garage that opens onto a public alley lets anyone see what is parked inside, and obscure or frosted glazing solves that without giving up the daylight. The second point is weight: glass units are heavy, so a large glazed area changes the spring and cable specification. Neither rules it out, they just need deciding at design stage rather than on fitting day.
