Replacing One Section of a Mount Prospect Garage Door
A sectional door is not one object. It is four or five separate steel sections hinged together, and every hinge on it is stamped with a number that says which joint it belongs on. Understanding that is what makes replacing a single section possible at all.

It is also why the job is more involved than unbolting the damaged piece. Hardware has to come across in the right positions, the replacement has to match the door it is joining, and the door has to end up hanging as square as it did before.
The Hardware Moves With the Section
Hinge numbers are not decoration. The offset between the hinge leaves increases as you go up the door, which is what lets each joint break over the curve of the track at the right moment. A number three hinge fitted where a number one belongs presents the roller to the channel at the wrong angle, and you get a door that binds at one point in the travel every single time.
The top section carries more than the rest. The opener arm bracket, the top fixtures and, on wide doors, a steel strut across the back all live there. Every one of those comes off the old section and goes back onto the new one in the same place, at the same fixings, before the door is put back on the track.
Matching One Door of a Matched Pair
Plenty of two-car garages around here were built as two single openings with a post between them rather than one wide one. That doubles the matching problem. The replacement section has to match the rest of the damaged door, and the repaired door then has to still read as a pair with the one next to it from the pavement.
What has to line up is the panel profile, the embossing, the steel gauge and the finish. A section from the factory sits alongside twenty years of sun and weather, and on a south or west-facing elevation that difference shows. Sometimes the answer is a correct-profile section and paint across the whole door; sometimes it is honest to say the pair will never match again and to talk about the alternative.
What Else the Impact Took With It
Damage rarely stops at the dent. Something that hit hard enough to crease a section usually also jumped a roller out of the channel, tweaked a jamb bracket, or let a cable go slack off the drum. Fitting a new section onto bent hardware puts a straight panel on a crooked door.
The other case is slower. A bottom section that has rusted from the inside out, where the floor seal held meltwater against the steel year after year, is telling you about the section above it as well. If a door is already carrying two or three replaced sections on original track and original springs, we will say plainly when the repair has stopped being the sensible option.

Questions
Mount Prospect questions about this job
The dent is only cosmetic. Does it have to be replaced?
Often not. A shallow dent in the face of a panel on a door that still runs true is a looks problem, not a mechanical one. Replacement becomes the right call when the section is creased right through, when the end stiles are bent, or when the hinge line has been pushed out of straight so the joint no longer folds cleanly.
Can a section be found for a door nobody makes any more?
Sometimes. Many profiles were made under several names and an equivalent section exists even where the original brand is gone. Sometimes it genuinely does not, and the choice becomes an approximate match in a low position on the door or a new door. That gets settled by identifying the door on site, not by guessing over the phone.
Will a new section change how the door balances?
It can. Sections vary in gauge and in whether they carry insulation, and a replacement that is heavier or lighter than the original shifts the weight the springs were wound for. The door is lifted by hand and checked at several heights afterwards, and the counterbalance is adjusted if it needs it.
