When a Torsion Spring Lets Go on a Mount Prospect Garage

That distinction matters more here than it does on a new build. Garages in this village have been cycling doors for sixty and seventy years, and the hardware carrying the springs has aged along with the framing it is bolted to.

The Header Everything Bolts Into

The centre bearing plate sits above the middle of the opening and takes the load of both springs. It is lagged into the header. Dimensional lumber from the fifties has been drying and shrinking around those lag screws ever since, and eventually the plate starts to rock a fraction with each cycle.

A plate that moves lets the shaft run out of true. The spring body then flexes unevenly instead of winding cleanly, and it fails years earlier than its rating says it should. Driving the same screws harder into the same tired holes is not the fix. The plate gets re-anchored into sound framing, or backed properly, before a new spring goes anywhere near it.

Left Hand, Right Hand, and Why the Pair Must Match

On a two-spring door the springs are wound in opposite directions, one left-hand and one right-hand, and the winding cones are colour-coded so you can tell them apart. They work against each other across the centre plate. Fit two of the same hand and the shaft is being twisted one way all day, which walks the set screws loose and chews the flats on the tube.

Pairing a new spring with a surviving old one causes a quieter version of the same problem. The two apply different torque, so the door lifts with a slight twist, one cable carries more than its share, and the drum at the light end starts to slip its wrap. Both springs go on together, wound to the same count.

Drums, Set Screws and the Shaft Itself

A cable drum is held on the shaft by two set screws that bite into the steel. Over enough cycles they cut real flats, and a drum that has crept even a turn on the shaft pays out one cable further than the other. That is what a door leaning slightly in the opening is usually telling you.

With the springs off, the drums come off too. The flats get inspected, the end bearings get spun by hand, and a shaft that is scored or bowed gets replaced while it is already out. Doing any of that later, on its own, means unwinding a fresh set of springs to get at it.

The door lifts fine but drops the last foot and lands hard. Is that the spring?

Usually, yes. A spring that has lost tension holds the door well enough while it is moving but stops supporting it at the bottom of travel, so the last section falls rather than settles. An opener with the down-force set high will do something similar. The technician checks the spring wind first, because that is the part carrying the weight.

Can one torsion spring do the work of two?

On some doors it is the correct specification, not a shortcut. Narrower and lighter doors are commonly built with a single spring sized for the full weight. Wider or heavier doors normally get two so the load is shared across the shaft. What matters is that the spring on the door matches the door, whichever count the manufacturer intended.

Is there any warning before a torsion spring breaks?

Sometimes. The door gets noticeably heavier to lift by hand, the opener labours in the last few inches, or you can see the coils sitting unevenly along the body. Often there is nothing at all and the first sign is the noise. If the door has started to feel heavy, get it looked at while it is still in one piece.
