Measuring the Opening, Not the Old Door
The door coming off is a rough guide and nothing more. What matters is the finished opening width and height, the headroom between the top of the opening and the ceiling, the side room either side for the vertical track, and the backroom along the ceiling for the horizontal rails.
Headroom is the measurement that catches people out here. Attached garages on split-levels were often framed tight to the joists, and a standard torsion assembly needs a certain clearance above the opening to sit properly. Where that clearance is missing, a low-headroom track kit does the same job. That gets settled with a tape measure on site, before anything is ordered.
One Wide Door or Two Singles
Two-car garages in the older parts of Mount Prospect were sometimes built as two separate single openings with a post between them, and sometimes as one wide opening. Both are still around. A pair of singles leaves you a working door if one goes down, and each panel is light. One wide door gives a clear opening and a single opener to look after.
