There is a real difference between a door that is out of alignment and a door that is off the track. The first is a repair you can book. The second should not be operated at all until somebody has looked at it.
Misaligned, Bent, or Fully Off the Rail
Misalignment is subtle. The door judders at the same point every time, the rollers squeal on one side only, or you can watch a gap open between the roller and the channel as the door travels. Nine times out of ten the rail has worked loose at a bracket rather than bent.
A bent rail shows itself. There will be a kink or a flattened section, usually low down where something struck it. Off the rail is unmistakable: rollers sitting outside the channel, the door leaning in the opening, and often a cable hanging slack beside it.
Rollers Are Half of Every Track Problem
The basic plastic rollers fitted as standard on a lot of these doors wear their wheels oval and their stems out of true. Once that happens they stop rolling and start dragging, and a dragging roller is what pulls a door out of alignment in the first place.
Nylon rollers on sealed bearings run quieter and last considerably longer, which is why a track repair often leaves the door sounding better than it has in years. Hinges get checked in the same pass, since a worn hinge lets a section twist and presents the roller to the channel at the wrong angle.
Straightening, Replacing and Squaring Up
A gentle bow in a rail can sometimes be brought back true. A sharp kink cannot, because the steel has already stretched there, and a section hammered straight will let the roller jump again at the same spot within months. Where that is the case the section gets replaced.
The rails are then squared to the opening and to each other, spaced so the rollers sit fully in the channel without binding, and the brackets are fixed back to the framing rather than to whatever they had drifted onto. The door is cycled by hand and then on the opener before the job is called finished.

The door is off the track and stuck at an angle. Can I lever it back on?
Please do not. The weight is being carried by cables and springs that are now loaded unevenly, and working the door about can snap one of them or drop it entirely. Unplug the opener and leave the door standing where it is.
Something clipped the track but the door still runs. Does it need attention?
Yes, sooner rather than later. A rail that is slightly out lets the roller ride against the edge of the channel on every cycle. That wears the roller, works the brackets loose and eventually lets the door off the track, usually at the least convenient moment.
Does the whole track set need replacing, or just the damaged piece?
Usually just the affected section. Vertical and horizontal rails are separate pieces joined at the curve, so a damaged vertical can be swapped without disturbing the rest. Full sets go in when the rails are too light a gauge for a heavier replacement door, or when the original track has rusted through at floor level.
The door came off after closing on a bin. What actually happened there?
The door landed on the obstruction and stopped, but the drums kept turning and paid out slack cable. That slack let the rollers wander out of the channel, and then the opener lifted the door on cables that were no longer wrapped evenly. Cables, rollers and rails all get checked after something like that, not only the part that looks obviously wrong.
