Quieting a Garage Door Under a Mount Prospect Bedroom
Split-levels put a bedroom directly over the garage, and that layout turns an ordinary garage door into an alarm clock. Somebody leaves at ten past six and the whole floor above knows about it.

Most of what gets heard up there is not travelling through the air. It is travelling through the structure, up the track hangers and the opener bracket, into the joists that are also the bedroom floor. So roller work in these houses is as much about the path the noise takes as about the wheels themselves.
Two Different Noises, Two Different Causes
Squealing, scraping and a dry chattering sound are airborne. They come from roller stems turning in dry bearings and wheels dragging in the channel, and they are loud in the garage but muffled once you are upstairs with a door shut.
A low rumble you feel through the floor is the other kind. That is vibration handed straight into the framing, and swapping rollers alone will only take the edge off it. The horizontal track hangers, the jamb brackets and the opener's header bracket all get checked and re-anchored, because a bracket with one loose lag screw acts as a very effective loudspeaker.
Counting Them, and the Two That Are Not Like the Rest
A standard four-section door carries ten rollers: two per section, with the top pair sitting in adjustable fixtures. Stems come in different lengths and the wrong length either binds in the hinge or lets the wheel sit shallow in the channel, so they are matched to the hardware on the door rather than bought by the bag.
The top fixtures are adjustable for a reason. They set how firmly the top section pulls in against the header seal, which is why a door can be quiet and still let a draught in along the top. The bottom rollers are the exception to everything: they live inside the bottom brackets, which are under full cable tension whenever the door is down, and they are not a part to pull out on a Saturday.
Noises That Are Not the Rollers at All
Where in the travel the noise happens narrows it down quickly. A knock that arrives once per shaft revolution, evenly spaced, is a dry end bearing rather than a wheel. A rattle only in the first and last foot is usually hinges flexing as the sections break over the curve. A slapping sound that follows the carriage along the ceiling is chain on the rail.
That is worth sorting out before parts get bought, because a full set of rollers fitted to a door whose real problem is a worn centre bearing changes very little. Hinges, bearings and the opener rail get checked in the same pass, and anything running dry gets treated rather than replaced for the sake of it.

Questions
Mount Prospect questions about this job
Will new rollers on their own make the door quiet?
They will fix the squeal. They will not fix a rumble coming through the ceiling, because that comes from hardware handing vibration into the framing. If the complaint is noise in the room above, the brackets, hangers and hinges matter as much as the wheels do, and all of it gets looked at together.
There is black dust along the bottom of the track. What is that?
Worn wheel material, and it is a useful sign. A roller that has gone out of round stops rolling and starts sliding along the channel, and that dust is the wheel wearing away. Once you can see it collecting, the roller has been dragging for a while and the track edge is taking wear too.
The door was serviced last year and it is loud again already.
That usually means the noise was never friction to begin with. Lubricant quietens a dry joint for a season; it does nothing for a collapsed bearing, a loose bracket or a door that is out of balance and leaning on one rail. Recurring noise is a diagnosis job rather than another round of spray.
