An attached garage is warmer than a detached one, and that turns out to be a mixed blessing. Snow packed into the wheel arches melts instead of staying frozen, the salt water runs onto the floor, and the door throws it back up onto its own hardware every time it moves.
Cleaning Comes Before Anything Gets Greased
Lubricant laid over a salted, gritty surface does not rinse it away. It seals it in against the steel and turns into a grinding paste that carries the grit straight into the bearing you were trying to protect. On a door that has been through a Chicagoland winter, that is the difference between a tune-up that helps and one that quietly accelerates the wear.
So the order is fixed. Track channels wiped out first, roller stems and hinge pivots cleaned back to metal, the bottom corners where brine collects given proper attention, and only then does anything get applied. The track itself does not get lubricant at any stage, whatever the tin says. It is a path for the rollers to follow, not a bearing surface, and grease on it collects the next round of grit.
Which Points, and Which Product
A lithium or silicone-based garage door lubricant goes onto the hinge pivots, the roller bearings where the roller is not a sealed unit, the end bearings on the shaft, the torsion spring coils as a light film so the coils slide against each other rather than bind, and any lock or latch mechanism. A chain or screw drive gets treated on the rail according to what the opener manufacturer specifies.
The list of what to keep it off is just as important. Nothing on the track. Nothing on a belt drive's belt. Nothing near the photo-eye lenses. And thin penetrating sprays are the wrong tool entirely: they are designed to creep in and free seized fasteners, and what they actually do to a working joint is wash out the grease that was in there and leave it drier than they found it.
When the Noise Comes Back Within a Month
Lubrication buys quiet on a door whose parts are still serviceable. If the squeal returns within a few weeks, the bearing it was coming from has already collapsed and the grease was masking it rather than fixing it. That is a replacement, and no amount of further spraying changes the answer.
The same goes for a door that runs rough in the cold. If it feels heavy in the first foot when you lift it by hand with the opener disconnected, that is counterbalance, not friction, and lubricant will do nothing for it. This is why the visit includes a balance check, a pass over the fasteners and a look at the opener's force settings. It tells you which of the two problems you have before anyone spends money on the wrong one.

How often does a door need this in a garage the cars use all winter?

Is a can from the hardware store good enough?

Usual suspects are the bottom rollers, the seal itself frozen or stuck to the floor, and the bottom brackets. It is worth having looked at rather than treated with more spray, because those are the components under cable tension.
