That is the characteristic extension-spring fault, and it comes straight out of how the system is built. Each side has its own spring, stretching along its own horizontal track, with nothing physically linking the two. Nothing forces them to stay matched, so eventually they do not.
Two Springs That Never Talk to Each Other
On a torsion setup both springs sit on a shared shaft, so they are locked into the same motion whether they like it or not. Extension springs have no such arrangement. Each one stretches independently, and each one fatigues at whatever rate its side of the door demands.
Give that a decade and the two are no longer pulling the same weight. The door racks slightly on every trip, the rollers on the trailing side ride against the edge of the channel, and the track wears a bright line where it should not have one. Replacing the sagging spring alone puts a fresh one beside a tired one and the racking simply reverses. They go on in matched pairs, measured, not eyeballed.
The Cable That Runs Through the Middle
An extension spring is under tension along its whole length, and it hangs above the horizontal track. In an attached garage that means it hangs directly over the route between the car and the door into the house. When one parts, the loose end goes somewhere, at speed.
A containment cable threaded through the centre of the spring and anchored at both ends turns that into a spring that thrashes and stops. Garages built here in the fifties and sixties frequently never got one, because it was not standard practice at the time and nobody has been under the door with a torch since. Where they are missing, they go in with the new springs as part of the job.
Pulleys, Hangers and the Parts Nobody Looks At
The lift cable on an extension door runs from the bottom bracket, over a pulley at the front of the horizontal track, back along the spring and onto an anchor at the rear. Those pulleys wear. A sleeve bearing that has gone dry stops turning, and once the pulley is static the cable saws across it and starts shedding strands. A new cable on a seized pulley lasts weeks.
The rear anchor loads into a perforated hanger lagged up into the ceiling joists. On a split-level with a room above the garage, that hanger is fixed into the floor structure of whatever is upstairs. A hanger working loose is worth finding before it becomes the reason the spring came adrift, so it gets a hand on it every time we are up there.

One stretches past its working length, stops returning the same force as its partner, and the door starts lifting out of level. Check whether a cable runs through the middle of each spring. Look at the pulley for a groove worn off-centre. Do not put a ladder under a loaded spring and do not touch the anchors.
