Two cables run from the bottom bracket of the door up to a drum at each end of the spring shaft, and they share the load between them. When one goes, the other is instantly doing work it was never sized for. That is why a cable failure leaves the door wedged in the opening at an angle.
Salt and Standing Water Do the Damage
Cables corrode from the bottom up. The lowest few inches sit at floor level, where meltwater, road salt and slush off the car pool every winter, and on unsealed concrete that moisture has nowhere to go.
A car in and out twice a day through a Chicago winter drags a lot of salt onto that floor. Worth a look with a torch each spring at the bottom bracket end of both cables: rust-orange strands, or a frayed, fuzzy look where the wire should be tight, means the cable is on its way out. Catching it there is a great deal easier than catching it afterwards.
The Cable Is Usually the Symptom
Cables rarely fail on their own account. They jump the drum when the door lands on something and the sudden slack lets the wrap escape the groove. They fray against a worn drum flange. They snap because the springs have weakened and the cable has been carrying more than its share of the door for months.
So a new cable on its own is not the repair. Drums get inspected and reset on the shaft, spring balance gets checked, the bottom brackets get examined, and the door is run several times to confirm the wrap stays even at both ends.
Leave the Bottom Bracket Alone
The bracket at each bottom corner of the door is where the cable anchors, and it sits under full spring tension whenever the door is closed. Undoing those bolts with the springs still wound is how people end up in an emergency room.
The correct order is to unwind the springs or block the door before anything at that bracket is touched. Replacement cables also have to match each other in length and be tensioned equally, or the door lifts out of square and starts chewing rollers within a few weeks.

One side of the door is hanging lower than the other. Is that a cable?
Very likely. A snapped or slipped cable lets one corner drop while the drum at the other end keeps its wrap. Stop using the door. Running the opener now drags it further out of square and can bend the vertical track as well.
The cable came off the drum but has not broken. Can it just be wound back on?
It can, but only after working out why it came off. Slack cable means something else let go: a door that landed on an obstruction, a weakened spring, or a drum that has shifted on the shaft. Rewinding without fixing the cause puts you back in the same position within days.
How often do lift cables actually need replacing?
In a dry, tidy garage they will outlast several sets of springs. In a garage where the floor is wet and salted four months of the year they go noticeably sooner. They are usually replaced alongside the springs, because the door is already stripped down at that point and it is the sensible time to do it.
Are cables different on a door with extension springs?
Yes. On an extension setup the cable runs over pulleys and back to an anchor point rather than winding onto a drum, so the pulleys and their bearings get checked at the same time. A worn pulley will shred a brand new cable in short order.
