Extension Springs, Containment Cables and Older Glenview Garages

Look along the horizontal tracks above where the car parks. If the springs are up there running front to back, one each side, rather than on a shaft above the opening, you have an extension system. It works by stretching instead of twisting, and the thin steel cable that should thread through the middle of each spring is the part that matters most.

That cable is a containment cable. Without it, a spring that lets go while the door is down releases all its stored length at once and travels. With it, the pieces stay strung on the cable. It is the first thing we look at on an older Glenview door, and on the oldest installations it is not always there.

Extension springs turn up on the smaller openings: the single-car doors on fifties ranches and capes, and the detached garages sitting back off the alley or at the end of a long drive on the older lots. Light doors, decades of quiet service, and hardware that in a lot of cases has not been touched since it went up.

They are not obsolete and they do not need replacing on principle. What they do need is the safety hardware they were meant to have, and pairs that still match each other.

Two Springs, One Stretch

Extension springs are sold in weight-rated pairs and are usually colour-coded at the end. Both are supposed to extend the same distance under the same load. Once one has taken a set and no longer returns to its resting length, the two sides pull unevenly, the door starts to rack in the tracks and the rollers on the slow side grind.

So the springs go in as a pair, and the parts they hang from go with them where needed: the S-hooks, the pulleys at each end, the pulley bearings, and the clip that anchors the rear of the spring to the track hanger. A seized pulley chews a cable quietly for months before anyone notices.

When Converting to Torsion Is Worth Doing

Torsion is the better system on a wide or heavy door and it keeps the moving parts out of the side room, which matters if the garage is used for storage. Conversion needs headroom above the opening, usually around twelve inches, plus a clear span for the shaft.

Plenty of older Glenview garages do not have that headroom, and on a light single-car door there is no real gain anyway. We will tell you which case you are in rather than quoting the conversion by default. Sometimes the right job is a correct pair of extension springs, proper containment cables and fresh pulleys.

There is no cable running through my springs. How urgent is that?

Treat it as work to book rather than an emergency, but do not leave it indefinitely. A spring under load holds real energy, and containment cables exist because of what happens when one fails without them. They are inexpensive to fit and can go in on the same visit as anything else the door needs.

A spring broke and the door came down hard. Is the door itself damaged now?

Often not, but it needs looking at. What we check is the bottom section for a bow, the bottom brackets and hinges for cracks, the tracks for a spread or a flat spot at floor level, and the cables for a kink where they went slack. Any of those found early is a small job.

Do extension springs last longer than torsion springs?

Not inherently. Both are rated by cycles and both fail through fatigue. What extends the life of an extension setup is that these doors tend to be lighter and, on a detached garage, used far less often. The same springs on a busy attached garage would not last nearly as long.
