A stained wood-look composite often reads better than real wood on a west-facing elevation, because it holds its colour through afternoon sun that would have real timber back on the schedule for refinishing.
Three Bays: One Wide Door or Two Openings
A three-car garage can be built as one double plus one single, or as three singles with posts between. It is worth deciding this deliberately rather than accepting whatever the builder framed.
Two openings with a post between give the elevation a rhythm and let the doors stay in proportion to the windows above. Three singles do that more strongly again and give you a shorter, lighter door on each, though you pay for three sets of hardware and up to three openers. One very wide door costs the least in hardware and is the hardest to make look like anything. Panel divisions and glazing placement do more for the result than the style name does.
What Survives Ten Winters and What Needs Refinishing
An insulated steel sandwich with a polyurethane core is the workhorse. Its insulation value only earns anything if the garage is attached and conditioned, but the rigidity it adds is worth having on any wide door regardless.
Real wood is genuinely handsome and genuinely a commitment, and a south or west exposure is what shortens the interval between refinishing. Composite overlays over a steel core split the difference. On hardware, pick finishes rated for exterior use, because decorative straps and handles on a street that gets salted all winter will show it first.
