Vertical Track: Usually a Bumper
The vertical section runs from the floor up to the curve, and it is the piece within reach of a side mirror, a bike handlebar or a reversing bumper. A dent in the flange is enough. The roller reaches it, stops, and the door either binds or climbs out.
Once a roller has left the track, the section it belongs to is out of line and the sections above start pulling. Doors rarely come off at just one point. That is why we take the door apart properly instead of levering it back in and hoping.
Loose Hardware and Track That Drifts
The horizontal track hangs from the joists on angle iron and lag bolts. Ten years of vibration in an attached garage, especially under a chain drive, backs those lags off a little at a time. The rail sags, the two sides stop being parallel, and the door starts scraping at the same point on every pass.
The same goes for the track brackets bolted into the jamb. Where the wood behind them has gone soft, tightening the bolt achieves nothing beyond chewing the hole out further. That gets fixed with sound backing, not more torque.
Back In, Straight, and Then the Cause
The door is clamped and the tension is controlled before any roller goes back. Sections come back into line one at a time, bent track is straightened where the steel is sound and replaced where it is not, and every bracket, hinge and roller along the path is checked for what the derailment did to it.
Then we go looking for the reason. Track does not wander out of line on its own. It is a broken cable, a spring that has lost tension, a flattened roller, a loose bracket or an impact. Putting the door back without finding that just books the same call again in a few weeks.

The door jumped out on one side. Is the door ruined?
Usually not. Sections are tougher than they look and most off-track doors go back in with new rollers and a straightened or replaced piece of track. The ones that end up needing new sections are the ones that were forced back in a hurry, then run afterwards.
There is a gap between the roller and the track near the top. Should I worry?
It is worth a look. A gap at the top curve usually means the horizontal track has dropped or spread, and a roller with room to move is a roller that eventually comes out. Small adjustment now, off-track door later.
Can bent track be straightened instead of swapped?
If the bend is shallow and the steel is not creased or split, yes, and we carry the tools for it. Once track is kinked, torn at a bolt hole or rusted through at the floor, straightening does not hold, so we fit new rather than come back.
