Connected Does Not Automatically Mean Compatible
There are two routes. A retrofit controller wires into an existing opener and adds app control and status sensing without replacing the motor. Or the whole unit gets swapped for one with the radio built in.
Retrofit is the cheaper route when it works, and it does not always work. Older openers without rolling-code security, units missing the terminal layout a controller needs, and motors already showing gear or capacitor wear are all cases where the money goes into an opener that is on its way out. We test the existing unit before recommending either.
An Attached Garage Makes This a House Door

Is it safe to open the door from an app when nobody is home?
It is as safe as the sensors underneath it. A remote open on a door with working photo eyes and a tested auto-reverse is reasonable. Doing it on a door whose sensors have been bypassed or knocked out of line is not, and that is the first thing we check before enabling any remote or scheduled operation.
