Cables are the link between the springs above the opening and the bottom brackets down at the floor. They carry the counterbalance along each side of the door. Nothing else in the system is doing that job, which is why a cable is not a part you get to postpone.
Where Cables Give Up First
Look at the bottom couple of inches of cable, right where it meets the bracket by the slab. That is where they go. Meltwater off the car, road salt tracked in through a Glenview winter and a slab that stays damp until March all attack the same short stretch, and galvanized cable that has been on a ranch's door since the seventies has had a long time to think about it.
The other failure is mechanical. A door coming down on an obstruction, whether that is a trash can, a bike or a ridge of frozen slush along the threshold, lets the cable go slack while the drum keeps turning. The cable jumps its groove, wraps over itself, and the next lift pulls the door up crooked.
Why a Crooked Door Should Not Be Cycled
With one side hanging, the entire counterbalance now runs through the other side. Rollers dig into the track flange, the top section twists, and the surviving cable takes a load it was never sized for. Two or three more cycles is often the difference between a cable job and a cable, track and panel job.
There is also the way it fails. A door held on one cable can drop, and it drops from an angle. If it is already open and leaning, leave it up and call rather than trying to bring it down.
Both Sides, Set Equal
Cables go on in pairs. Fitting one new cable against one aged cable puts the door out of balance from the first lift, so we replace both and set both drums to the same wind. While the cables are off we check the drums for scoring, the bearings for play, the bottom brackets for corrosion and the springs for cycle wear.
Setting the drums is the part that takes the time. Both sides have to lift together, evenly, under equal tension, so the door meets the floor square and seals across its full width. Then it gets balance-tested by hand and run through several full cycles before the truck moves on.
