Two Tests You Can Run Before We Get There
Most of what makes a garage door dangerous is invisible from the driveway and testable in about a minute. Lay something solid and expendable flat under the door, a roll of paper towels on its side works, and press close. The door must contact it, stop, and reverse. Then run the door down again and wave a foot through the opening near the floor. The photo eyes must send it straight back up.

If either test fails, stop using the opener until it is sorted. Both of those systems have been required on residential openers since 1993. An opener with one misaligned, blocked or deliberately bypassed is one the household has quietly stopped being protected by, usually without anyone deciding to.
What Gets Checked Above Head Height
The parts that hold the door up are the ones nobody looks at. Springs get checked for coil gaps, rust between coils and cycle wear at the cones. Cables get read along their full length, and particularly at the drum and where they anchor at the bottom bracket, since that is where fraying starts and where a strand lets go first.
Then the drums themselves, the set screws, the end bearing plates and the centre bearing. On an extension-spring door the containment cables get checked, and their absence is the most common serious omission we find on older installations here.

On the oldest garages we still find one-piece doors, lift handles fitted to doors that are no longer balanced, brackets rusted through at floor level, and openers old enough to predate the safety requirements entirely. Those get called out plainly rather than buried in a list.
