The remnant of a broken spring still holds tension, so it comes off with bars rather than a drill. While the shaft is accessible we check the centre bearing, the end bearing plates and the cable drums, since a drum whose set screws have crept is a common reason a door starts going up crooked.

Is a heavier spring always the better choice?
